The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the Boston Temple will become the 100th operating temple.
The Boston Temple fulfills an announcement made in the April 1998 General Conference by President Gordon B. Hinckley to have 100 operating temples.
According to the April 1998 conference report, President Hinckley said, 'This will be a tremendous undertaking. Nothing even approaching it has ever been tried before.'
Since President Hinckley's announcement, construction of temples has accelerated, said Kim Farah, spokesperson for LDS Church Public Affairs.
Public tours of the temple will be held from Aug. 29 - Sept. 5 and Sept. 9 - Sept. 23 with no tours being offered Sept. 10, said a release from LDS Church Public Affairs.
There will be four dedicatory sessions held Oct. 1, and the temple will open for operation Oct. 2.
Farah said there are two other temples to be dedicated before the Boston Temple, making it the 100th temple. The dedication dates for the two temples have not been announced, Farah said.
Farah said the Boston Temple was chosen to be the 100th temple because of its size and historical significance.
The history of the area includes President Brigham Young serving a mission there, Farah said.
