A popular doughnut is coming to Orem.
Krispy Kreme, a nearly 63-year-old North Carolina based company is a leading branded specialty retailer of premium donuts, including the company's signature Hot Original Glazed.
'I am a University of Utah graduate, and I adore Utah. That's why we decided to build here. The chance to build in Utah was what my dream was really all about,' said Lincoln Spoor, owner of Krispy Kreme in Orem and other locations.
'It's the best doughnut on the planet. We sell an experience as well as a doughnut,' Spoor said.
Krispy Kremes has applied for a building permit next to the Chevy's Restaurant off of University Parkway, said Tamara Veardall, Development Services, of the Orem Business Licensing Division.
When Kripsy Kreme decided to open in Utah, it chose Orem primarily because it was the best location.
The store will be close to the freeway, as well as both UVSC and BYU campuses.
The store will be 44,000 square feet and include a drive-thru, Spoor said.
Krispy Kreme in Orem will sell a variety of doughnuts and drinks, including strawberry-banana, root beer and orange milk flavors.
The store is scheduled to open in August.
Many BYU students travel to other states in order to get Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
'Krispy Kreme doughnuts are amazing. They're the best,' said Tayrn Smith, a junior from Mesa, Ariz., majoring in history.
Krispy Kreme opened in 1933.
The demand became so great the owners opened the shop for retail business by cutting a hole in the shop's wall to sell the donuts. This innovation was the beginning of Krispy Kreme's modern-day window service.
'You can see the product being made fresh. The product can be eaten only seconds after it's made. That's our secret, a hot doughnut,' said Stan Parker, vice president of marketing.
Krispy Kreme is best known for its fresh, glazed, yeast-raised doughnuts, and the 'Krispy Kreme Original Glazed,' which stores announce to their customers as being made fresh with the unique glowing red 'Hot Donuts Now' sign.
The sign is usually lit from 5 a.m.-11 a.m. and 5 p.m.-11 p.m. .
Krispy Kreme started expanding five years ago, and has recently signed agreements to expand into 15 new markets, including Hawaii, Parker said.
