For BYU alumni, and eventually students, changing email addresses will no longer be a hassle.
Soon the BYU Alumni Association will launch a new email pointer service.
The service will allow alumni and students to set up a permanent email address, because the pointer service will forward emails directly to the users' current email server. The service will also allow individuals to change their forwarding address at any time.
'It will function like a change of address filled out at the post office, but immediately,' said Michael Busenbark, Manager of Alumni Marketing/Operations.
For individuals changing jobs or email addresses frequently, the service provides them with a permanent email address that can be used for life.
Charlene Winters, Manager of Alumni Marketing/Operations, said the new email addresses should be set up in time to be used by incoming freshman.
Alumni can register the email address on-line at http://alumni.byu.edu/. According to Busenbark, current students will be able to set up their accounts sometime shortly before fall semester begins.
The service was originally launched on April 1, according to the Alumni Associations web page, but only a few days before it was closed.
At the demonstration of the service, several colleges suggested an additional way to identify themselves.
'We are in the process of registering and obtaining the rights from Burgoyne for @byu.net,' Busenbark said.
The original plan was launched with the email address of @byualum.net
'I am excited about the service,' said Sharalyn Heath, a graduate of the BYU College of Fine Arts and Communications. 'With all of the job changes and the many email addresses I have had, it will be nice to have something permanent that I won't have to notify people has changed when I move.'
The idea was first proposed to the Alumni Association a year ago. Many other universities across the nation have been offering similar services to their students and alumni for many years.
