Letter to the editor: Find happiness through service

Dear Editor:

Though we live in Happy Valley, we're not always happy. We often hear that a cure is service. Most do their home teaching, buy flowers or send thank you notes. Tutoring reading at an elementary school has done it for me.

I was assigned Jose, a little guy who can barely speak English. My roommates provided me with enough Spanish to find out that he came here four months ago from Mexico. He breaks out into a big smile whenever I launch into a little broken Spanish.

The other day we worked on the letters J, G and P. I'm learning the Hispanic pronunciation of the alphabet while he learns the English (or something close). It's fun to see him struggle then learn. This was the highlight of my day.

So, service is a key to happiness, but I'm not up for the Peace Corps right now. I'm in Middle Mormonville, and have a couple of years of grad school left. I think Jose is my best option.
