The 2000 BYUSA elections kicked off with the announcement of candidates, Tuesday at 3 p.m. on the Wilkinson Student Center Terrace with the announcement of five teams running for BYUSA president and executive vice president.

The candidate teams running for president and executive vice president are Brandon Lee and Chris Keller; David Larsen and Dana Zinke; William Brady and Sarah Sandberg; Adam Barlow and Katherine Fairbanks; and Darin Zwick and John Jacobs.

Each team had several minutes to introduce their platforms.

Lee, a junior from Idaho Falls, Idaho, majoring in accounting, said his team's theme, 'Maintaining a Balance,' is a principle that guides his own life.

'We want to create a balance with you (the students) through BYUSA and opportunities for student activities,' Lee said.

Keller, a senior from Blackfoot, Idaho, majoring in communications studies, is running with Lee and said his team's personalities accurately represent the student body.

David Larsen, a junior from Citrus Heights, Calif., majoring in history, said his team would work to answer the call to build a Zion University.

Larsen and his running mate Dana Zinke, a junior from Laguna Niguel, Calif., majoring in humanities, said they would answer the calls for the students and the world through programs including on-line teacher evaluations and a 2002 Olympics bulletin.

William Brady, a senior from Cornwall, Ontario, Canada, majoring in public relations, said his team would focus on making connections.

'We have a vision of BYU as an incredible force of good throughout our community, the nation and world,' Brady said.

Sarah Sandberg, a senior from Provo, majoring in elementary education, who is running with Brady, shared her three-part theme.

'Our theme is 'get connected, be connected and stay connected,'' Sandberg said.

Adam Barlow, a junior from Burbank, Calif., majoring in American studies, said his team hopes to take BYUSA as it is now and move it even further by developing unity through service and school spirit.

'You didn't choose your high school but went to one based on where you lived. We all chose to come to BYU. We need to respect that and develop school spirit,' Barlow said.

Katherine Fairbanks, a junior from Ogden, majoring in human development, who is running with Barlow, said her team would work to encourage involvement with BYUSA programs.

Darin Zwick, a junior from Salt Lake City, majoring in construction management, said his team would work to implement programs to build on the positive work that has occurred in BYU's history.

'As we begin the 21st century, we truly stand on the shoulders of exceptional leaders,' Zwick said.

John Jacobs, a senior from Modesto, Calif., majoring in economics, who is running with Zwick, said his team hopes to take the focus off BYUSA, and put more emphasis on BYU itself.
