Letter to the editor: American imperialist attitude is hypocritical

Dear Editor:

I am writing in response to the Feb. 1 letter regarding respect for the flag. Although certain valid points were raised, the tone of the letter blatantly screams of American imperialism!

The writer states that even non-Americans should stop and honor a song and piece of cloth that hold no intrinsic meaning to them. I am almost positive that the majority of Americans would not stop and do the same if in China, Vietnam, Romania or Canada. How hypocritical! So why stop with the flag as a sign of respect? Let's make all guests of this country sit at the back of the bus to show respect. Let's make them kowtow before Americans and proclaim, 'Thank you, oh mighty Caucasian race of America! Thank you for freeing me from the bonds of slavery, the bonds of my own culture, which is obviously inferior to yours!'

This attitude shows the rest of the world that Americans consider themselves better -- something far from the truth. In a society that proclaims human rights, freedom and equality, it is ironic and sad that such hypocritical and ignorant attitudes exist. Thankfully, not all Americans reflect the letter's point of view.
