A monster sponsor was signed on to the Olympics earlier this week.

Monster.com became the first 'dot.com' sponsor of the 2002 Winter Games. This is the first time in history that an online Web site will sponsor the Olympics.

'The Salt Lake Organizing Committee is thrilled by the unprecedented corporate participation of Monster.com as the first 'dot.com' involved in the 2002 Games,' said Mitt Romney, President and CEO of the Salt Lake Olympic Committee in a recent press release.

Monster.com will be the Official Online Career Management Services sponsor of the 2002 Olympic Games and Olympic Teams. They have joined an agreement with the Olympic Properties of the United States, the United States Olympic Committee and SLOC to provide job services.

The role of the Web site is to line individuals up with online careers whether they are volunteers or permanent employees. Jobs available from all over the United States are posted on Monster.com where individuals can be connected to information about a particular company and their specific job requirements.

With 9.7 million hits per month, this site will certainly help SLOC receive the 26,000 volunteers that they need beginning March in preparation for the Olympics. SLOC currently has about 250 full-time employees and hopes to raise it to around 800 employees for the Games, according to the Monster.com Web site.

According to the site, SLOC reported to Monster.com that volunteer and full-time jobs available are found in areas of accounting, finance, event planning, security, food services, retail, marketing and information services. SLOC also provides several benefits such as health and medical benefits, vacation time and a retirement plan.

Monster.com joins the other 15 official sponsors to become the 16th sponsor of the 2002 Games.

'To become an official sponsor of the Olympics, a company must contribute more than $20 million in goods, services and cash, and Monster.com has done that,' said Caroline Shaw, SLOC's Communications and Media Relations spokeswoman.

The 2002 Olympic Games are looking for people to volunteer. The SLOC will begin recruiting people in March 2000.
