The demise of BYU's wrestling program is a loss for all of us. We are denying another group of fine athletes the privilege of the BYU experience. Students who will not only athletically but intellectually aid our school will take BYU off the list of schools to apply to because it has dropped such a wonderful sport and thereby spoiled a wonderful opportunity to serve.
Quite a number of LDS and non-LDS wrestlers believe BYU has an impressive program. My high school's wrestling coach, who has coached many state champions, was suitably impressed by my brother's decision to come here for a wrestling camp offered in the summer. My brother enjoyed a wonderful experience and learned a lot that aided his wrestling performance the season following.
Traditions will be broken when BYU takes away wrestling. My grandfather wrestled; my father wrestled. My brother wrestled, and I hope one day that my sons will wrestle. The article on the front page of the Universe on Monday broke my heart as it talked of a 'noticeable class of older men that seemed to share a bond for something that has dwindled from 300 collegiate teams to 98 in the last two decades.'
To take away wrestling at BYU is to deny a large group of people the benefits of BYU, and will deny BYU a priceless gift. Why do we have to see collegiate wrestling teams dwindle to 97? Please, BYU students, at least show respect for this great sport if not support of our wonderful team.
