A letter to the editor accusing The Daily Universe of containing an excess of grammatical errors used the sentence 'what is the ACT test weeding out, anyway?' in reference to many BYU students' poor English skills.
A follow-up letter countered with the following mistaken argument: 'The fact is, ACT is an acronym for American College Test.' I assume the author meant to point out the author's own mistake. As a matter of fact, ACT stands for American College TESTING, an independent nonprofit organization found on the web at www.act.org. Throughout their site, they frequently say 'the test' to refer to the ACT Assessment.
Too often, people write letters to the editor about a mistake they noticed in the paper. One could even say that this letter is just that. However, I now extend the aim of this letter to all those who excitedly recognize that those around them are human and immediately seek a public forum wherein to voice their discovery. LEAVE IT ALONE. People make mistakes, sometimes publicly. Recognize the error, pat yourself on the back for doing so and read on.
