Dear Editor:
It is with some humor and disbelief that I read the opinion of a student who believes that PE uniforms are a 'hypocrisy' to the Honor Code. I think the 'reasoning behind the inconsistency' is so obvious, it is laughable even to ask. While I definitely agree that PE uniforms are not acceptable in classrooms, administration buildings and for general walking around, their purpose is obvious in the intended settings. Has this person ever tried running in a pair of long shorts? I would no sooner wear street clothes to exercise in than I would wear them to church.
There is a time and a place for many things that are not appropriate in other settings. While we're on the extremist road, why don't we get the swimmers something less offensive, maybe a wetsuit? Those pants on the football players are awfully tight, let's trade them in for a nice pair of sweats. The entire basketball team must be condemned. They not only have their knee caps showing, some even dare to wear a tank top.
Let's not cloud the real issues with such ridiculous notions. It only takes attention and credibility from the real problems. Before we attack the (non-existent) breach of the Honor Code by the entire PE department and all participating students, why don't we work on fixing the real breaches of the Honor Code that have some merit.
