Summerhays paces women's golf

Freshman Carrie Summerhays earned her fourth top-10 collegiate finish at the Pioneer Electronic Bruin Classic in Menifee, Calif., Wednesday, leading the BYU women's golf team to a ninth-place finish.

Summerhays fired a final round of 73 at the 72-par course to move up three spots and end in eighth place with a three-day total of 226.

Senior Jamie Stevenson led the Cougars early in the tournament, shooting a consistent 76-76-76 -- 228. Stevenson finished the match in 13th place.

Maria Boden of Oklahoma State and Jennifer Rosales of the University of Southern California claimed top individual honors, scoring 217 and 223, respectively.

Oklahoma State won the team title with a score of 894, while Pepperdine was second at 912 and UCLA third with 919. BYU carded a three-day score of 944, finishing ninth of 12 teams.

According to a news release, head BYU head golf coach Gary Howard said the Cougars shot their best round of golf all season.

'We played the type of golf we are capable of playing today,' Howard said. 'It's good to see improvement this early in the spring.'

Other BYU finishers were junior Nicole Parry (80-80-79 -- 239) and freshmen Adrianne Gibby (83-88-77 -- 248), Jessica Gardner (86-86-80 -- 252) and Teal Thron at (87-85-82 -- 254).

The women's golf team opened its season with an eighth place finish Feb. 16-17 at the Pepperdine Wave Invitational in Coto de Caza, Calif.

Senior Jamie Stevenson led the team and placed tenth individually, scoring 81-75 -- 156.

Stevenson was named Western Athletic Conference women's golf Athlete of the Week for Feb. 22-26 for her performance at the Pepperdine Invitational. Her score gave her three top-20 and two top-10 finishes so far this season.
