A fire broke out in a Provo restaurant late Sunday night resulting in heavy property damage.

Despite the estimated $125,000 in property damage that resulted, no one was injured in the blaze.

Just before 11 p.m. on Sunday night, the fire started at The Grandview Cafe, a Chinese restaurant at 330 W. 100 North. Twenty firefighters, from four different stations around Provo, responded to the fire, said Lynn Schofield, the public relations officer for the Provo Fire Department.

Firefighters were met with smoke billowing out of doors and windows when they arrived at the scene. The fire took nearly two hours to extinguish, Schofield said.

On Monday afternoon, fire department investigators were able to determine the cause of the fire.

'Paper products had fallen behind the freezer and over time became brittle,' said Schofield.

The paper products were carry out boxes that Chinese restaurants commonly use for take-out meals. Because the boxes were dry and brittle, they were ignited by the heat generated by the freezer, Schofield said. This led to the larger structure fire.

Schofield added, that investigators could find no evidence of foul play.

The owners of the restaurant were available for comment.
