Dear Editor:
When we were high school freshmen, we looked forward to the special things that awaited us as upperclassmen. There was the prom, varsity sports -- heck, even government class was fun.
All this was possible because we paid our dues and were juniors and seniors. Now, let me remind you of the most coveted thing about being an upperclassman -- the parking privilege.
Now then, I ask you a question. Was high school so much more orderly than BYU? Why are we, juniors and seniors, forced to park in the last possible spot in the Marriott Center lot, or worse, on 400 North?
I say unto you, this is UNFAIR. We have paid our dues and deserve better parking than the rookies. How many of us have had to park in the middle of nowhere only to walk past our neighbor's car (which belongs to a freshman) parked in the 'Y' lot closest to the Richards Building? This has to stop.
This is my solution (I hope President Bateman is reading this). Just as we did in high school, we need to receive 'line upon line....' When you are a freshman, you cannot get a parking permit of any kind. There really is no need -- the majority live in the dorms and don't have a car anyway. Those who do can find plenty of spaces on the streets.
When you are a sophomore, you can purchase an 'R' lot sticker. This will make you feel like you have finished a stage in your college life, but still allow you something to look forward to.
Only as a junior and senior are you allowed the much-anticipated 'Y' lot sticker. I think this is only fair.
Let's do something to treat our upperclassmen better and help solve the parking problem.
