Robbery suspect still at large

By AARON BOYD

A robbery and hostage situation occurred at Payless Shoe Source on State Street in Orem Monday night at 6:07.

Lt. Karl Hirst of the Orem Department of Public Safety said two males entered the store about a minute apart. The first male selected a pair of shoes, while the other walked to the rear of the store.

As the customer paid for the shoes, the second male approached and held a gun to the customer's head. He then demanded the customer's wallet and the money from the register.

After the second male was given the cash, the clerk said the man grabbed the first male saying: 'You're coming with me.'

Right after the two men fled the store, the clerk heard a door close and a car drive away. They were last seen heading south on State Street, according to a news release.

The man with the weapon is described as a 6-foot tall white male in his early 20s. He has reddish hair and was wearing a green- or blue-hooded sweatshirt. The weapon used was a stainless revolver with black grips, Hirst said.

The other man is described as a clean-cut white male in his early 20s with brown hair, wearing jeans and a dark jacket, Hirst said.

Hirst said that police are still unsure whether the robbery was actually a hostage situation or whether the two men planned the robbery together.
