Best of Police Beat

Theft

A report was made that between Sept.1 and Oct. 9, a Cannon Center student employee had stolen more than $1,300 from crediting his own signature account. The 17-year-old student has been terminated and action is pending.

Criminal Mischief

A May Hall resident was covered in glass when a water balloon was thrown through his window at 12:30 a.m. The victim was in bed when he heard a loud blast, then he was showered in glass. He reported no injuries. Damages is estimated at $160.

A witness reported four males throwing water balloons at vehicles from the pedestrian overpass on North Campus Drive, Nov. 13 at 3 a.m. Police responded and approached the individuals. They fled and were arrested. The suspects were charged with interfering with officers, throwing missiles and public intoxication. Three of the four suspects are BYU students. The individuals were released after receiving citations and will be referred to the Honor Code Office.

A student volunteer for the University Police observed a suspicious student near the cougar statue. As the volunteer approached, the student ran away and the volunteer discovered that the statue was covered in red paint. Grounds crew responded and cleaned the statue.

Auto Theft

A student reported his Toyota Sport Utility Vehicle stolen. Later that day, officers spotted the vehicle. The officers followed it, and pulled the driver over after the vehicle traveled the wrong way on a one-way road. The officer got out of his car, but did not approach the Toyota. The officer instructed the driver to turn off the car, but the driver did not comply. The officer repeated himself, but instead the driver put the vehicle in reverse. The officer drew his weapon, and repeated the command. Then, the officer directed the driver to throw the keys out the window. The driver complied. Soon, the vehicle's owner arrived and said the driver was a friend. The owner did not press charges, however, the driver was issued a citation for going the wrong way on a one-way street.

Disorderly Conduct

A female reported that in the TNRB parking lot, a male approached her car and began yelling. He also held the door shut so she could not exit her car, and was reaching into the vehicle. When she got out of the car, he tripped her and ran after her with his fists raised. The man was accusing her of speeding through the parking lot. The man was contacted by University Police, and advised that his conduct was close to an assault. The victim did not press charges.

Unusual Object

Three students reported an unusual object hanging from a statue outside the Smith Family Living Center. An officer responded, removed, and disposed of the pierced cow tongue that was hanging from the statue's arm.

Expose

An individual was sitting on a bend at the bottom of Maeser hill, south of the Smith Field House. She observed a heavy set male jogging along the path. As he ran past, he exposed himself. She immediately left and called the University Police from her apartment. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

A 25-year-old non-student was climbing Y Mountain when she discovered a heavy-set balding man exposing himself in lewd behavior as he was standing on the north side of the Y. She observed the man was wearing a pair of tan underwear, and the rest of his clothing was hanging on tree branches nearby. The victim ran down the mountain and contacted the county sheriff. The man is between 5 foot 10 and 6 feet tall, has brown facial hair, and appears to be in his late 40's or early 30's. The report is still under investigation.

Stalking

A student reported numerous accounts of disorderly conduct. She was walking on campus and was approached by a man who kissed her on the mouth. Later that day, he was waiting outside of her class. The next day she reported two more incidences where she saw the man. Once at 9 a.m., at 2 p.m., and at 3 p.m. She was on campus and was surrounded by a group of five men. she became distressed and pushed them out of the way. The last incident occurred by the JKHB where she was grabbed by a man and was kissed on the mouth and she slapped his face. The white male has dark brown hair, blue eyes, is 5 feet 11, 185 pounds, and a muscular build. He was wearing a blue t-shirt, a Mickey mouse watch and a CTR ring on the left hand.

Medical

A cheerleader suffered a bloody nose and had swelling to his face during the High School Football Championship games Friday. Another cheerleader accidentally kicked him in the nose as he was catching her. BYU EMT's responded and treated the man.

Lewd Behavior

A student reported that an individual driving a white Mazda followed her from the Bean Museum to the parking lot next to the Marriott Center. While the victim was in her car, the driver of the Mazda pulled up along the left side of her car, got out with his pants down, and began making obscene movements to the song 'Me so Horny.' She drove away and notified the police of the incident, and gave a description of the man. The man has light blond hair, is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds.

After the description was given, police located the individual in a parking lot. Police pulled over the individual and searched his car. Police found a loaded gun, binoculars, scissors, a knife, and a '2 Live Crew' tape. The individual admitted to approaching three girls that day. He had an outstanding warrant from Lehi and 10 cases of Lewdness from the University of Utah. He was arrested and booked into Utah County Jail.

Vandalism

A student residing in the fourth floor of W-Hall DT left his room to go to church. Between 11 a.m. and to 1 p.m. unknown individuals left a wild duck in a bucket of water in his room. Attached to the duck was a note that read 'Please feed Moses at least three times daily and give him fresh water. We named his Moses after the prophet because he likes to escape out of Egypt, if you know what I mean. He really likes people.' While the duck had been locked in, it had messed in the room. The cost of clean up was $30 and the duck was released back to nature.

Assault

Two parents of different children got into an argument over the supervision of their children on the swing set at Wymount Terrace. One parent slapped the other on her face. The police are still taking statements and the matter is still under investigation.

Burglary

Officers observed a suspicious vehicle on several occasions. Officers issued a traffic stop and found a TV, VCR, and a fire extinguisher taken from Comfort Inn and placed in the backseat of the car. The stolen items led to solving a burglary case. The 18-year-old students, both residents of Helaman Halls, were both arrested. The estimated recovered property is $650.
