Tutoring services offer classes to help students i

By KELLEIGH COLE

Tutoring services offered on campus give freshmen an opportunity to receive one on one help in many classes, particularly GE classes.

Many of the colleges offer labs on campus where students can go to ask teaching assistants questions about key concepts and get help with class assignments.

The labs are set up with areas for students to work on their assignments and TAs are on hand to help answer students questions.

Labs are available for GE classes such as Math, English, American Heritage, and Physical Science.

The English department offers the Reading and Writing Center where students can get help developing their English skills.

'Peer tutors are trained to help students in any aspect of writing process, things such as developing a thesis,' said Penny Bird, manager of the Reading and Writing Center. 'We usually only work with grammar if the teacher requests it. Our goal is not to perfect the paper, but to improve the student writer.'

The center offers classes on critical reading, speed reading, MLA and APA style, and test taking.

In addition to labs on campus, Students Helping Students can match students up with their own tutor.

'We offer tutoring in almost any subject,' said Stacey Whitney, program manager for Students Helping Students. 'If we don't have a tutor for that particular subject, we try to find one for the student.'

To be matched with a tutor, students can call Tutoring Services or go to their office in 380 SWKT.

Tutoring for students is free of charge.

Tutors are upperclassmen volunteers who have gone through a tutor certification and received a B or better in the class they are tutoring for, Whitney said.

'We are starting a new program with the residence halls and dining services where we will organize group study sessions.' said Pat Esplin, director of Freshman Academy. 'We will post suggested times for group study sessions in designated spots in the on-campus cafeterias.'

Off-campus students are also welcome to attend the study sessions.
