Speaker declares:

seize opportunities

By MELISSA ROBERTSON

An associate professor of counseling and special education advised students to take advantage of opportunities at the Devotional Tuesday.

Sally M. Todd said almost all opportunities, whether they are sudden or appear over time, require faith.

She told of a last-minute opportunity she had to substitute for a keynote speaker during a conference in Australia. Todd decided to go, and it proved to be a great missionary experience for her.

'I learned when you are in partnership with the Lord, you can do incredible things far beyond anything you imagine you can do and be successful with,' she said. 'However, it requires some things on your part. The Lord expects you to exert your faith, your prayer and your courage.'

Todd also told students to look at opposition as an opportunity.

'How often do we fight against opposition and misjudge the trials of our lives? Might this not be a wise Heavenly Father, or mentor, teacher or friend trying to help guide us to freedom, success and perhaps life itself?' Todd said.

She said students and faculty have great opportunities at BYU.

'For some of you the opportunity right now is education and the sacrifices that you are making to fulfill your preparation for the mission that the Lord would have you fulfill in your life,' she said.

Todd told faculty and students they could find opportunities at BYU by turning to campus resources including advisers and recreational activities.

But the greatest support comes from the Lord, she said. She quoted D&C 68:6: 'Wherefore, be of good cheer and do not fear, for I the Lord am with you and stand behind you.'
