'Guys and Dolls' plays in Orem

By MICHELLE TOLMAN

The Hale Center Theatre presents, 'Guys and Dolls,' a refreshingly energetic musical comedy by Damon Runyon, directed by Richard G. Wilkins.

The musical centers on Nathan Detroit and Sky Masterson, both fast-paced gamblers, who fall in love with two unlikely ladies.

The women have plans to reform their men into the marrying kind. It's a comedy of unexpected love where everyone gets more than they gambled for.

The musical score features classic songs 'Luck be a Lady,' 'Sit Down, Your Rockin' the Boat,' 'Marry the Man Today' and 'Sue Me.'

'I loved it!' said Anna Smith, a junior from Houston, majoring in sociology. 'The play had so much energy, there was never a dull moment.'

Foster Carr, a sophomore from Burbank, Calif., played the role of Benny Southstreet. 'I get to act stupid, and people tell me I'm good for the role,' Carr said.

But for the 16 to 20 hours of rehearsals a week, the cast is not paid.

'We want people who want to be in the plays because they love to act' Hale said.

'I love it!' said Doug Shattuck, who played Nicely-Nicely Johnson. 'Guys and Dolls' is his seventh play at the Hale Center Theatre.

The Hale Center Theatre is one of the few `theatres in the round' left around. It was started 50 years ago by Nathan and Ruth Hale in Glendale, Calif. What started as a ward production and a love for acting, has grown to four theatres located in California and Utah.

'Guys and Dolls' will run through July 7. For more information, call 226-8600.
