Free concert series

There is no such thing as a free lunch, but there are free concerts.

The Temple Square Concert Series caters to a variety of musical tastes. All concerts start at 7:30 p.m. in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square, unless otherwise noted. Most performances last about an hour. Dress is casual. Admission is free.

MAY

21 -- Brighton High School's English Hand Bell Ensemble will perform sacred, patriotic, classical and popular music.

23 -- The Salt Lake Symphony will give its spring concert, including the Gayaneh Ballet Suite No. 1 of Khachaturian, Ravel's 'Pavane pur une infante defunte,' and Borodin's Symphony No. 2 in B Minor.

27 -- The solo competition winners of the American String Teachers Association of Utah will perform.

30 -- American West Symphony and Chorus will perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D Minor.

JUNE

5 -- David Pickering, a senior from Arlington, Texas, majoring in organ performance and pedagogy, will perform works by Dan Lochlair, Bach, Liszt and Karg-Elert.

6 -- Andrew Wilde will perform Beethoven's Sonata No. 13 in E-flat, Schubert's Fantasy in C and Chopin's Fantasy in F Minor.

7 -- Massimiliano Frani, a BYU faculty member, will be performing ballad's, polonaises and the Sonata in B-flat Minor, Opus 35, by Chopin.

13 -- Cellist Monika Rosborough-Bowman, with Lawrence Gee on piano and her husband, Marcel Bowman, on violin, will perform a Bach suite, a Beethoven sonata and a Brahms Trio.

14 -- Works by Bach, Muczynski, Gaubert, George and Burton will be performed by flutist Laurel Ann Maurer and pianist Mark Neiwirth.
