Travelling 'lightly' through life will be the topic of today's Devotional given by Gloria Melendez, BYU professor of Latin American literatures, cultures and language.
'We carry a lot of burdens that we don't need to have,' Melendez said. Traveling 'light' through life will help people lift the weight they carry in their backpacks, she said.
In working and traveling with study-abroad students, Melendez has observed, 'When students travel to different lands and see people living without any of the conveniences we enjoy, they realize that they don't need CD's or computers to be happy, they just need to stay close to their Heavenly Father,' Melendez said.
'I hope that my message will buoy up students and help them choose wise things to carry in their backpacks,' she said.
Melendez has taught at BYU since 1980. She completed her doctorate in Latin American literature at BYU and received her bachelor's degree in anthropology from the University of Utah in 1955.
Currently Melendez teaches Latin American and Pre-Columbian literatures, cultures and languages. She lives in Pleasant Grove and has five children and 18 grandchildren.
