True feminism
My high school teacher, Mr. Akins, asked the question again, “Are any of you feminists?” Perhaps one or two of my 25 classmates raised their hand. At the time, I didn’t consider myself a feminist, because feminists wanted to take over the world and have men be their slaves. It wasn’t until I was educated about feminism that I learned I had always supported it.

Destructive criticism
“I don’t usually drink Coke,” one student said to another. “Walking around BYU with a Coke makes me feel rebellious.”

Truly deserving it
When I was in third grade, it was the greatest desire of my heart to win the 100-yard dash in my school’s annual field day. I worked hard for that race. I was so happy when I crossed the finish line in first place. After finishing, I noticed that my principal was handing out “everybody is a winner” ribbons to every participant. You can imagine my anger as I realized that I was not being recognized for all of my hard work. In reality, not everybody is a winner, and it is time that children were taught such.

Seize the day
Is waiting to have kids after marriage the best plan? Today’s checklist goes something like this: education, travel, marriage, a home, travel, then finally kids, but only a few! Have children become part of our to-do list?

Hope for transfer students
It was my first semester at BYU. I didn’t have the traditional freshman experience. Coming from BYU—Idaho, I found the BYU campus was daunting, and I was nervous about asking people for help. At BYU—Idaho, I knew the campus, I had a good group of friends, and I had a great GPA. But I felt that I needed to transfer to BYU Provo.

Called to teach
When I think about my time at BYU, I think about a whirlwind of incredible experiences: capstone research, movies at the dollar theater and football games. But as I prepared to graduate early last summer, there was always that gnawing question: What in the world am I going to do after I leave here?

Salt Lake Center classes
As a transfer student from LDS Business College, my first impression of the Salt Lake Center was that the classrooms were quite empty compared to LDS Business College. This is why I believe the university should offer more classes at the Salt Lake Center to use the resources efficiently.

Slaves to the screen
In a world where tweets and Facebook are just at our fingertips, it can be easy to get so caught up in our text messages and emails that sometimes the person sitting across from us seems to not even exist.

Beards and 'Batman'
Recent events have caused me to ponder deeply the beard ban at this great university. Oddly enough, I found answers to this universal enigma from the hit movie 'Batman Begins.'

Killing your own potential
Are you, or someone you know, chained down by controller cords and heavy consoles inside a make-believe world? Video games allow anyone to use their imagination and become someone stronger, faster, more intelligent, more attractive and more courageous on a screen. Such alluring options subtly persuade people of all ages to get lost inside gaming addictions that have the potential of destroying sociality, physical health, mental health and ultimately, life.

Is peace a possibility?
Many who once marched against the war on Iraq and detest U.S. domination have made a change in their attitude on American airstrikes in Iraq and Syria. Why? The Islamic State. Americans have been appalled by the awful killings of James Foley and Steven Sotloff, two American hostages held by the Islamic State. The justness of vengeance against their killers is something everyone agrees on. The terror-engulfing methods of ISIS make it easy to arbitrarily approach the vaporization of the Islamic extremist group; airstrikes can destroy bodies, but they can’t destroy political antagonisms. Nor would a renewed occupation solve the problem.

Focusing on real issues
Ebola hits primetime news, and the world goes into a frenzy. Complete panic strikes America, and we go into precaution mode. We are donating money to fight the cause and prevent its impact. But what about world hunger?

One-party rule
BYUSA has enjoyed one-party rule for too long. If BYU were a state, we would face scrutiny from the international community and possible sanctions until we started having free and fair elections.

Predatory parking
Recently, while walking back to my car with my date, I found my car hitched up to a tow truck. I had parked legally and was furious. I told the man to unhook my vehicle.

Language struggle for international students
For every freshman at BYU, finding a place to live to a big concern. BYU offers on-campus housing and off-campus student housing for incoming freshman to choose from.

Divide class by marital status
Every male at BYU is a witness to the collateral damage of the missionary age-change announcement over a year ago. While we rejoice in the gathering of Israel, the populating of Israel has taken a detrimental blow. Of course, none of us would suggest a revision of divine inspiration; that would be blasphemous. However, action must be taken to ensure that the LDS society continues to stand firm upon its foundation — the family.

Re: Inexcusably terrible drinking fountains
Before Christmas a letter ran written by someone who hates the new water fountains in the HBLL. However, I love the new water fountains, especially since I carry a reusable water bottle around like many planet-conscious students. Also, I don't have to find a fountain every time I want water.
