BYU men’s tennis is headed to San Diego, Calif., for the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships this weekend and looks to build upon the great start from the team.
The tournament features many college programs around the country including Washington, Northwestern, University of San Diego, Cal Poly, Utah State, just to name a few.
Coach Zack Warren of the BYU men’s tennis team emphasized the importance of getting important reps against high level programs.
When asked about any specific schools to look out for this weekend, Warren mentioned University of San Diego, as it has been ranked within the top 10 in the country for the last 10 years.
“[University of San Diego Toreros] were in the WCC with us a few years ago, so some familiar faces,” Warren said. “So it will be a great opportunity for us to compete against them.”
The players that will be competing in the tournament this weekend include Alex Edmonston, Hardy Owen, TJ Wells and Adam Chodur.
The tournament will be singles and doubles matches and Coach Warren wanted these players to get important reps before competing in the Mountain Region event in Las Vegas later next week.
The double pairings for the weekend are Adam Chodur/Alex Edmonston and Hardy Owen/TJ Wells.
When asked about how the players are getting prepared for this weekend's matches, Warren said, “We’re trying to get a lot of points in, get them some match level energy.”
Warren emphasized the importance of energy within these tournaments.
“I think energy is huge, especially for doubles. You’ve got to be ready to go from beginning to end in that abbreviated format,” he said.
Warren also mentioned how singles are important to have similar energy but it is OK to be more calm and “zen,” as Warren put it.
BYU has the chance to face some of the best schools in the country this weekend. In doubles, look for the Cougars to have a winning record and continue to build important chemistry as they look towards the Mountain Region event in Las Vegas.
For a specific double’s duo to look out for, Edmonston and Chodur have been on fire in recent doubles matches including last week. where Edmonston and teammate Hardy Owen had a strong performance where they won four of six matches last week.
Look for this duo to have a strong weekend in the tournament.
