The BYU baseball team beat Utah Valley in Orem on Tuesday 10-5.
The Cougars are now 15-16 on the year and 8-10 in away games.
BYU had a slow start in the first four innings, then scored all 10 runs during innings five through eight.
In the top of the fifth inning, Ryker Schow singled, then advanced from first base to third base on a throwing error from the Wolverines in a pickoff attempt. Then Matt Hansen homered to deep right field, picking up two RBIs and putting BYU on the board.
During the sixth inning, Ezra McNaughton singled and Ryder Robinson was hit by a pitch. After an infield fly from Easton Jones, Tu’alau Wolfgramm reached on a fielder’s choice, with McNaughton advancing to third and Robinson getting called out at second. Wolfgramm then stole second base.
Ryker Schow reached first base on another throwing error from the Wolverines, and McNaughton and Wolfgramm scored two unearned runs. Matt Hansen later singled, and Ryker Schow scored another unearned run before the end of the inning.
In the seventh inning, Parker Goff was hit by a pitch. Bryker Hurdsman then reached first on a fielder's choice, but was able to reach second on another throwing error from UVU. Hurdsman then reached third base on a wild pitch.
Ryder Robinson walked and stole second base and after another walk to Easton Jones, Wolfgramm singled, scoring Hurdsman and Robinson. Ryker Show then singled, scoring Easton Jones from second base.
For the Cougars' last two runs, Graham and Hansen walked to first and second, then advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt from Parker Goff. Hurdsman hit a sacrifice fly to score Graham, then Hansen scored on a fourth fielding error by UVU.
BYU took advantage of UVU’s defensive struggles and scored the majority of its runs on errors from the Wolverines.
BYU pitching looked good, giving up five runs. There were eight total pitchers; Tyler Ball got the win (1-1) and Justis Reiser got his first save. The staff got a combined 12 strikeouts, but gave up nine walks and 10 hits.
BYU will play UVU again in May at Miller Park.
The Cougars continue conference play in Houston on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
