The BYU women's basketball team is scheduled to face another ranked opponent on Saturday night in the Marriott Center.
No. 22 West Virginia is traveling across the country to Provo in hopes of adding on to their back-to-back conference game wins.
BYU is coming off its first win over a ranked opponent — a 73-61 victory against No. 19 Texas Tech on Wednesday night at home — since February 2025. This also marked the first win over a ranked opponent for Lee Cummard as the head coach.
Freshman Olivia Hamlin has been an impact player for the Cougars as they have driven deeper into conference play. After dropping 20 points Wednesday night against Texas Tech, Hamlin has now posted three 20+ point games.
Hamlin’s ability to put the ball in the basket, combined with her gritty defensive play, has helped set the tone against top teams and competitors.
Taking a look at the Mountaineers, Keirra Wheeler has been a consistent leading scorer for West Virginia. Wheeler is a strong presence on both sides of the ball, and she has the ability to change the outcome of games.
BYU will look to lock up Wheeler in the shooting and passing game, while also planning to limit her ability to snag offensive and defensive rebounds.
Sophomore Delaney Gibb has gotten back into her usual flow after missing the beginning of the season due to injury.
After the win against Texas Tech, Gibb mentioned how proud she was of her team's ability to play connected and keep the ball moving on the court.
Fans can expect to watch big and exciting plays when Gibb is controlling the court. Her ability to move the ball in key moments and drive to the basket keeps the Cougars offense building in all four quarters of the game.
Cummard pushes his team to be relentless against top-ranked opponents. He knows that his players may be less experienced, but their pursuit throughout the entirety of the game to come together as a team and make plays is what can shift the result of a game.
The Cougars will look to bring this same intensity to the court against West Virginia on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Marriott Center.
