No. 24 BYU gymnastics' season ends with 3rd-place finish at NCAA regionals

With a chance to extend their season, BYU gymnastics fell just short Thursday afternoon, finishing third at the NCAA Regionals in Tempe, Arizona.

Up against No. 11 Michigan State, No. 6 Georgia and Southern Utah, the Cougars finished with a 196.250 total score.

Because it was a dual-quad meet, there were four judges on each event. The highest and lowest scores were dropped, and the remaining scores were averaged together for the gymnasts' final score.

Four teams will advance to the final round of the Tempe Regional — the top two finishers from each semifinal.

The Cougars performed best on the first and last events in Olympic rotation: vault and floor. On vault, the Cougars scored a total of 49.100, led by Tempe native Ava Jorgensen and freshman Scarlett Sonnenberg, who each posted a 9.875. The score marks a new career high for Sonnenberg.

The floor exercise was led by four Cougars who each scored 9.850: senior Kylie Eaquinto; freshman duo Sonnenberg and Daisy Stephensen; and beam specialist Brynlee Andersen-Broekman.

BYU usually excels on beam, entering the meet ranked No. 23 in the nation. However, it proved to be a struggle for the Cougars on Thursday, with several wobbles contributing to their 48.975.

Two Cougars competed for the final time Thursday — Eaquinto and Alilah Alvarado, who is graduating a year early. In Eaquinto's final meet at BYU, she scored a 39.325 all-around, with floor as her highest-scoring event. She scored 9.825 on vault, bars and beam. Alvarado competed in bars and beam, earning a 9.800 on beam.

Though more than 600 miles apart, there were plenty of BYU fans supporting the Cougars in Tempe.

"I know anywhere we go, we're gonna have BYU fans there, because BYU has fans all over the place ... It's always cool to see how many people show up for us," Jorgensen said. "It's just so nice to see that there are people all over the country who are watching us, supporting us and being there for us."

The finish caps BYU's best Big 12 season yet.
