No. 1 seed BYU hosts Alabama A&M in first round of WBIT

The BYU women's basketball team earned a No. 1 seed on Sunday to host Alabama A&M on Thursday at the Marriott Center for the 2026 Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament.

This will be BYU’s first postseason appearance since 2024. The Cougars will look to get their first postseason win since 2021.

Despite being left out of the NCAA Tournament, coach Lee Cummard expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue the season in the WBIT and return to the Marriott Center for postseason play.

This is the second time BYU has been earned a bid into the WBIT. The Cougars were a part of the launching of this postseason tournament in 2024, when they lost to Santa Clara.

In his first year as head coach, Cummard led BYU to a 22-11 record and a 9-9 finish in Big 12 play, the program’s most wins since the 2021-22 season and its best conference showing since entering the league in 2023.

The Cougars are frustrated to finish out such a respectable season with a good run in the Big 12 tournament without being seeded into March Madness.

Despite the disappointment, BYU will turn its focus towards protecting its home court against Alabama A&M on Thursday at 7 p.m.
