Men’s lacrosse's Mason Quick breaks 29-year-old record, leads BYU to win over Grand Canyon

No one in BYU men’s lacrosse history has ever scored more than nine goals in a single game.

That is, until Mason Quick took the field on Saturday in BYU’s 24-11 win over Grand Canyon.

Quick broke a 29-year-old record, passing Rex Hardy’s 1997 record of scoring nine goals in one game. He scored ten goals against Grand Canyon.

Quick, a transfer from the University of Utah, has only played two games as a BYU Cougar, but has quickly made an impact on the offense.

With Quick leading the way, BYU dominated Grand Canyon from the first faceoff and led the entire game.

“First game nerves were shaken off, and the guys were ready to go,” said coach Matt Schneck. “We got off to a fast start and took advantage of opportunities that presented themselves throughout the game.”

BYU’s offensive intensity stemmed from Quick, attackman Cade Kirschner, and faceoff specialist Carson Bennion. Kirschner had his own personal best game with six goals and two assists.

Bennion won multiple faceoffs for BYU, allowing the Cougars to dominate the time of possession and get out quickly on offense.

“(Bennion) gave the team a real spark with multiple fast break goals off the face off,” said Schneck.

BYU (2-0) returns to Provo to prepare for their next game against a team with a deep lacrosse history — the University of Texas.

“(The) University of Texas is going to be a very good team. (They have a) talented starting lineup and experienced coaches," Schneck said. "They are favored to win their conference championship and make a run for nationals ...
This game is going to be a great game to come watch.”

The Cougars will face Texas on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Provo High School.
