Lubbock letdown: BYU baseball loses 2 of 3 in series at Texas Tech

With a chance to improve its position in the Big 12 baseball race, BYU lost two of three games at Texas Tech last weekend.

Much was to be desired from the Cougars in their first and last matchup, with the highlight of the series coming in a game 2 win.

BYU’s first game in Lubbock was a low-scoring affair, with Ryder Robinson hitting an RBI single in the third, scoring the only run for the Cougars. Both of the Red Raiders' runs were in the sixth inning. Texas Tech's Tracer Loped had an RBI single, followed by a solo home run from Logan Hughes.

However, the bats came alive for the Cougars in the second game with BYU combining for 12 RBIs. After coming off one of his worst performances of the season against Utah, Garrison Sumner bounced back, pitching seven innings for the Cougars and only giving up three runs. BYU’s game 2 win turned out to be the highlight of the series.

Good pitching appeared to be the last thought on each team's mind in game 3. Twenty-six combined runs were scored in this last matchup, with only 12 combined strikeouts. Texas Tech had a strong fourth inning with six runs to increase the lead to 12-7. BYU then followed up with three runs in the sixth to cut into the lead, 12-10.

After BYU held the Red Raiders scoreless in the sixth, Parker Goff homered to left in the seventh inning to cut the lead to one, 12-11, but it wasn't enough as the Texas Tech ended up scoring three runs in the seventh and eighth to give it the 15-11 win.

The Cougars, who are 25-25 overall and 13-14 in the Big 12, sit in eighth place in the league standings.

Next up, BYU will host Utah Valley in a crosstown clash on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Miller Park.
