BYU baseball succumbed to a 16-run Kansas State performance Tuesday at Miller Park while scoring three runs in just eight innings.
The Wildcats opened with a hot start, putting up eight runs through the first three innings, four of which came in the top of the first.
BYU’s Ezra McNaughton scored the Cougars’ first run of the afternoon in the back half of the first with a home run to right field.
A wild pitch in the fourth and a run in the fifth extended Kansas State’s lead to 10-1 headed into the sixth. BYU did see a glimmer of hope in the same inning, with Easton Jones hitting a two-run homer, bringing in Ryder Robinson to shrink the deficit to seven.
Any hope the Cougars may have held on to was quickly removed following another Wildcat run in the seventh and a five-run eighth inning to cap off Tuesday’s blowout.
BYU was outhit 17-8 and got on second base just once through the contest.
The Cougars look to bounce back on Thursday, traveling to Waco, Texas, for a three-game series against the Baylor Bears.
