BYU coach Kalani Sitake is staying in 'Happy Valley'; receives long-term contract extension

Penn State relentlessly pursued BYU's Kalani Sitake to fill its head coaching vacancy.

But in the end, after a few days of meetings, rumors, speculation and media reports, Sitake decided to remain in Provo and continue coaching his alma mater.

Instead of going to Penn State's "Happy Valley," Sitake is remaining in Utah County's "Happy Valley."

Tuesday afternoon, BYU announced that athletic director Brian Santiago and Sitake had agreed on a long-term contract extension.

“We are not just investing in a football program. We are investing in Kalani Sitake,” BYU’s athletic director, Brian Santiago, said during a news conference Tuesday.

Sitake explained why he decided to stay at BYU.

“To be honest, I just want to be here longer,” he said. “This is a place I want to be for the long run. I grew up cheering for this team and playing here too.”

Sitake has led the Cougars to two consecutive 11-win seasons for the first time since 2006 and 2007. Since he became the head coach in 2016, Sitake has posted an 83-44 record.

Sitake expressed gratitude to the fans for their support and reiterated his long-standing goal to hug every fan. He became emotional while thanking his family for their love and support throughout his coaching journey.

He also thanked his staff and players.

“Being their coach has made me a better person. It’s hard to leave when you have something so special," he said.

With his future settled, Sitake said his focus remains on his team's upcoming match against Texas Tech in the Big 12 championship game in Dallas on Dec. 6, with a berth in the College Football Playoff at stake.
