From red to blue: Payton Fullmer and her transition to BYU gymnastics

Peyton Fullmer is a Salt Lake native who grew up cheering for the University of Utah.

But now she is a part of the BYU gymnastics team.

Fullmer grew up doing gymnastics, practicing at the club gym her parents own in Salt Lake City. She was recruited by a number of schools out of high school, but an injury in her senior year created an obstacle.

Due to an avulsion fracture, she made the difficult decision to quit gymnastics. That was until the head coach for Utah gymnastics reached out to her and asked if she would be willing to be a team manager.

Fullmer was able to make many strong relationships throughout her time working with the Utah team, and she still keeps them strong today.

"We created friendships more than just my job, so those friendships are still there, still strong, and I love every single one of them," she said.

Fullmer continued to train after healing from her injury at her mom's gym, and she was able to bounce back into the world of gymnastics.

"I miss it, I miss the hard work, I miss the challenging days. The urge to just flip and have like an outlet was what brought me back and has kept me going since then," she said.

The environment of BYU, especially as an athlete, is one she really cherishes and appreciates.

"When you're surrounded by other people who are lifting you up, I have loved that aspect of being here," Fullmer said.

Fullmer knew she wanted to do gymnastics for as long as she could, and attending BYU as an athlete gives her an opportunity to do that.

"When I came on my visit, it just kind of felt like I was supposed to be here," she said. "That kind of was my determining factor, was the way I felt when I came."

Even though the season is still a couple of months away, Fullmer is excited to compete for the first time in a collegiate setting

"Obviously there's some nerves, there's always gonna be nerves there, but I'm feeling pretty good," she said. "I have really started to connect with the team so I am really excited to get to go out and compete with these girls that have also worked so hard. Genuinely, I just can't wait."
