BYU's Delaney Gibb lands Fox News interview after viral Sunday practice comments

BYU women's basketball star Delaney Gibb appeared on the “Fox and Friends First” news program on Tuesday to discuss her viral comments about not practicing on Sunday.

The attention originated from a press conference during the Cougars’ WBIT tournament run, when a question was asked about the pros and cons of the team’s decision to refrain from Sunday practices.

Gibb took the opportunity to share her thoughts about the importance of faith and Sabbath observance, even when some view the decision as a competitive disadvantage.

“There’s things that are bigger than basketball and Jesus Christ and having faith in Him is something that’s bigger than basketball,” Gibb said.

Her comments turned heads outside of the women’s college basketball realm, even making headlines internationally in the Daily Mail.

The viral reaction came as a complete surprise to Gibb.

“I actually had no idea,” Gibb told “Fox and Friends First.”

"A question was asked, and obviously, I just wanted to give my opinion and thoughts,” she said.

Gibb went on to explain what honoring her faith looks like and how BYU has given her the support to do so.

“I am able to represent something greater than myself — my Savior, Jesus Christ,” she said. “Being able to take Sundays off and use it as a day of worship and a day to recenter and refocus my life on Christ is super special.”

Gibb also expressed gratitude toward coach Lee Cummard and emphasized the importance of his shared support.

“He’s someone who is connected with us both on the basketball court and outside of basketball,” she said. “He’s someone who really supports all of our beliefs and all the different faiths that we have on our team.”

Her interview on Fox News has since drawn even more attention to the issue, with many praising her for standing up for her beliefs on a national stage.
