Cougar hitters pound the Highlanders

BYU baseball exploded at the plate on Monday in an impressive 11-3 win against UC Riverside.

The Cougars' 11 runs came on 16 hits. Seven of those hits were doubles.

Ryder Robinson had a great game at the plate, going 4-for-5. Every hitter except one in the Cougar lineup picked up at least one RBI.

The Cougars scored three times on eight plate appearances in the first inning. Crew McChesney hit a two RBI double, and then scored a run on a double from Matt Hansen.

In the second inning, BYU scored two more runs from doubles by Robinson and Ezra McNaughton. The Cougars scored another run in the top of the fifth when Parker Goff doubled then scored on a contact play from Ryker Schow.

In the top of the ninth, the Cougars wreaked havoc on the Highlanders’ bullpen. They scored five more runs against three different pitchers.

The BYU pitchers threw a great game by committee. Seven BYU pitchers went to the mound and Nate Wochner picked up the win.

In the bottom of the ninth, right-handed pitcher Brock Snow struggled on the mound, hitting two consecutive batters before being pulled for Ethan Zufall. The Highlanders ended up scoring three runs in the inning, two runs charged to Snow and one run charged to Zufall.

BYU has the day off on Tuesday, then continues its 11-game road trip on Wednesday in Long Beach.
