BYU's Chen shines as women's tennis corrects course at home against West Virginia

BYU women’s tennis got back on the right track in conference play going 2-0 during its home stand following a 4-2 win against West Virginia and a strong showing from YuYun Chen.

West Virginia came into the matchup against BYU searching for its first conference win after an 0-5 start. The Mountaineers will have to keep searching after a commanding win from the Cougars.

Chen made quick work of West Virginia’s Lyla Byers as she finished her match in two sets without giving up a game. The native of Taiwan set the tone for what was a dominant showing for most of the BYU team.

Sue Yan Tan defeated Julie Bousseau in two sets 6-2, 6-2, Karina Mohamed defeated Lucia Tognoni 6-0, 6-3 and freshman Sage Bergeson defeated Sosanne Malaak 7-6, 6-0.

Kendall Kovick was the only singles BYU player unable to clinch a win as she fell to her former school 6-2, 6-3.

The Cougars also lost the doubles point, after they dropped two out of the three matchups.

After home wins against Cincinnati and West Virginia, BYU improved to 2-3 in conference and 13-4 overall, remaining perfect at home (6-0) and looking to carry momentum into its matchup with Colorado, also 2-3 in conference, on the road Thursday.
