BYU women’s tennis traveled to Fort Worth to compete in the Battle for the Boot, hosted by TCU from Oct. 23–25.
Arizona, Baylor, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Rice, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, Washington and Washington State all took part in the invitational.
Thursday opened with two doubles wins for BYU. Kendall Kovick and Gracie Levelston stayed hot, edging Notre Dame’s Rylie Hanford and Mari-Louise Van Zyl in a tiebreak, 7–6 (7–5).
Yuyun Chen and Bella Lewis also took down a Notre Dame doubles team, Jessica Kovalcik and Esther Vyrlan, 6–3. Freshmen Sage Bergeson and Karina Mohamed fell to TCU’s Maya Drozd and Cayetan Gay, 6–3.
In singles play against TCU, BYU went 2–4. Levelston and Chen were the only Cougars with a victory on the day. Levelston rallied after losing the first set to win 5–7, 6–0, 6–3, and Chen prevailed 7–5, 2–6, 6–2.
Friday was an impressive showing for the Cougars. Levelston and Kovick topped Texas Tech’s Hailey Murphy and Kseniia Logvin 6–3, and Bergeson and Mohamed cruised past Texas Tech’s Ella Brownback and TCU’s Letzia Corsini 6–1. In singles, BYU nearly swept Rice, dropping only one match.
On Saturday, Levelston and Kovick capped off their perfect doubles run with a 6–3 win over SMU’s Caroline McGinley and Allie Bittner. The pair went 3–0 at the tournament, extending their win streak to eight.
BYU swept the day in singles, defeating all opponents from Nebraska and Baylor. Levelston and Chen both completed stellar singles performances as they each finished the weekend with spotless 3–0 singles records.
Next up for the Cougars is the ITA Sectionals in Seattle, set for Nov. 6–8.
