BYU women's tennis advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 women’s tennis championship with a 4–2 win over Utah Utes women's tennis on Wednesday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
No. 37 BYU improved to 17-7 on the season with the result, overcoming an early deficit against No. 35 Utah in a matchup that featured numerous momentum swings.
Utah claimed the opening point by taking two of the three doubles courts. BYU’s win came on Court 2, where YuYun Chen and Sage Bergeson earned a 6–2 victory, but the Utes carried a 1–0 lead into singles play.
From that point on, BYU began to take control.
Sage Bergeson evened the score at No. 5 singles with a 6–2, 6–2 win. After taking control early in both sets, she limited Utah’s opportunities and quickly put BYU on the board.
Gracie Levelston followed at the top of the lineup, defeating No. 109-ranked player’s opponent 6–3, 6–2 at No. 1 singles. Levelston maintained steady play throughout the match, giving BYU its first lead of the afternoon as other courts remained in progress.
Sue Yan Tan added another point at No. 3 singles, earning a 6–3, 6–4 win. The match featured extended rallies, with Tan holding serve in key moments to push BYU ahead 3–1.
Utah picked up its second point at No. 2 singles to keep the match within reach, leaving the outcome to be decided on the remaining courts.
Karina Mohamed secured the deciding point at No. 6 singles, defeating her opponent 7–5, 6–2. After a closely contested first set, Mohamed separated in the second to close out the match and send BYU into the next round.
The match at No. 4 singles, where Chen faced Kaila Barksdale, went unfinished after the team result had been decided.
BYU won four singles matches after dropping the doubles point, with victories coming from the No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 positions. The Cougars’ ability to respond across the lineup proved key in the comeback win.
With the result, BYU advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship, continuing its postseason run after defeating its in-state rival on a neutral court.
