BYU women's tennis falls in rivalry matchup against Utah

BYU women’s tennis fell to Utah 4-2 Saturday at the Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City, marking the third straight loss for the Cougars.

BYU took the doubles point with strong performances on courts two and three. At No. 3 doubles, Sue Yan Tan and Bella Lewis defeated Utah’s Kaila Barksdale and Emmie Moore 6-3.

Kendall Kovick and YuYun Chen took court two in similar fashion, beating Emma Kamper and Andjelija Markovic 6-3 to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead to begin the match. The match on court one was unfinished.

In singles play, Utah responded with decisive victories on courts one through four to clinch the victory. At No. 4 singles, Barksdale evened the match with a two-set victory over Chen, 6-1, 6-0. Utah’s Sara Akid also won in straight sets, defeating Kovick 6-4, 7-5 on court two.

At No. 3 singles, Tan dropped the first set to Moore 3-6 but rebounded with a 6-4 victory in the second. Despite the momentum, Moore took the match on court three with a decisive 6-0 third-set win.

The matchup on court one followed suit. Utah’s Kamper and BYU’s Gracie Levelston exchanged sets, but Kamper took control of the third set, winning 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.

BYU’s lone singles point came at No. 6 singles, with Karina Mohamed defeating Hayley Roberts in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The match at No. 5 singles was unfinished.

The Cougars fell to 11-4 (0-3 Big 12) on the season, while the Utes improved to 7-5. BYU will face Cincinnati at the Indoor Tennis Courts in Provo on Thursday.
