BYU women's tennis beats Cal Poly 6-1

The BYU women's tennis team picked up a 6–1 victory over Cal Poly Mustangs on Saturday at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.

Cal Poly opened the match by securing the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, Cal Poly’s Kennedy Buntrock and Jessica MacCallum earned a 6–4 win over BYU’s Gracie Levelston and Sue Yan Tan.

BYU responded with wins on courts two and three, but Cal Poly’s result at the top spot proved decisive, giving the Mustangs a 1–0 advantage heading into singles play.

Singles competition quickly shifted the momentum in BYU’s favor as the Cougars found success across the lineup.

Levelston evened the match at No. 1 singles with a dominant performance, defeating MacCallum 6–0, 6–1. The result set the tone for BYU and erased the early setback.

BYU’s YuYun Chen followed on court four, earning a straight sets victory over Cal Poly’s Alexandra Ozerets, 6–3, 6–1, to give the Cougars their first lead of the afternoon.

BYU continued to add to its advantage as additional singles matches moved toward completion.

Bella Lewis secured a 6–3, 6–4 win at the No. 6 position, extending BYU’s lead to 4–1. Lewis maintained steady play throughout the match and closed out both sets without allowing Cal Poly to generate late momentum.

One of the most competitive matches of the day took place at No. 3 singles. Tan dropped the opening set to Cal Poly’s Candela Aparisi, 6–4, before responding with a strong second set, winning 6–1 to force a deciding third. Tan carried that momentum into the final set, closing out the match with a 6–4 victory and putting BYU within one point of clinching the dual.

The deciding point came at No. 5 singles, where BYU’s Sage Bergeson defeated Cal Poly’s Natalie Lynch 6–3, 7–6 (7–3). Bergeson controlled the opening set before the second set turned into a tightly contested battle.

The set was ultimately decided in a tiebreak, allowing Bergeson to secure the match and clinch the dual for BYU.

Cal Poly’s lone singles victory came at the No. 2 position. Buntrock defeated BYU’s Kendall Kovick in straight sets, accounting for the Mustangs’ only point outside of doubles play.

BYU recorded singles wins at positions one, three, four, five and six, dropping only one singles match overall. The Cougars clinched the dual before all courts were completed, underscoring the depth of the lineup and the team’s ability to respond after losing the opening point.

The win lifted BYU to 3–1 on the season.
