BYU women's basketball is developing new identity

Heading into the 2025–26 season, BYU women’s basketball is developing a new identity.

The program has undergone major changes with the hiring of head coach Lee Cummard — but Cummard isn’t the only change coming this year.

The Cougars have added six new players this offseason, including five freshmen and senior transfer Lara Rohkohl from the College of Charleston.

Among the five incoming freshmen is Utah standout Olivia Hamlin, who was named Utah 4A Player of the Year in both the 2024 and 2025 seasons. She also earned 4A All-State honors in each of those years.

BYU returns star sophomore guard Delaney Gibb, who was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and earned spots on both the All-American Freshman Team and All-Big 12 Team last season. She averaged 17.4 points per game.

Joining Gibb are sophomore guards Brinley Cannon and Kambree Barber — often referred to as “the twins” — who both started games during their freshman season.

“Something we really focus on and talk a lot about is toughness — just having that as an identity of the team,” Cannon said. “Any loose ball, we’re getting it. We’re sprinting down the court and running hard, and just those little things are something we’re trying to focus on and implement. Those are things this team is working hard at and has the potential to be really good at.”

In addition to the Cougars’ young, raw talent are redshirt juniors Ari Mackey-Williams and Marya Hudgins, both expected to return after missing all or parts of last season due to injury.

The team will also feature redshirt senior Heather Hamson and senior Hattie Ogden.

BYU will make its debut in an exhibition game against Western Colorado on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Marriott Center.
