BYU women's basketball looks to stay undefeated as it hosts Omaha Thursday at the Marriott Center.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the Cougars and the Mavericks, adding some extra excitement to the matchup.
BYU enters the game 2–0 and off to a strong start under first-year head coach Lee Cummard.
The Cougars have played well in their first couple games, especially on offense. One of the biggest standouts so far has been sophomore guard Delaney Gibb, who is averaging 16.5 points, five rebounds, and 5.5 assists. She’s been a major part of BYU’s early success.
Freshman guard Sydney Benally has also made an immediate impact with her playmaking. She’s averaging eight assists per game and had 11 in the opener, showing her ability to run the offense and get her teammates involved.
As a team, the Cougars have recorded 45 assists on 55 made shots, which shows how well they’re moving the ball and finding the open player.
Rebounding has been another strength. BYU is pulling down 50 rebounds per game, led by forward Lara Rohkohl, who averages 10 per game. Six different players are grabbing at least 3.5 rebounds, giving the Cougars a strong presence on the glass. If they continue to rebound well, they’ll give themselves a great chance to control the flow of Thursday's game.
BYU has an opportunity to set the tone early and take advantage of playing at home. With the confidence of a 2–0 start, the Cougars will look to jump out quickly and make Omaha play from behind.
A win would move BYU to 3–0 and mark the best start ever for a first-year coach in program history.
If the Cougars keep playing with energy, share the ball, and win the battle on the boards, they should put themselves in a strong position to take care of business and stay perfect on the season.
