BYU track and field wins seven titles at Big 12 championship

BYU took home seven championship titles on Feb. 27-28 at the Big 12 Track and Field championship in Lubbock, Texas.

BYU athletes took first in the men's and women's Distance Medley Relay, the men's and women's 3,000-meter race, the men's 1-mile, women's 800-meter and the women's 4x400-meter relay. The women's team took second place, and the men's team took fifth place in the championship.

Star freshman Jane Hedengren took first in the 3,000 with a time of 8:46.11. She ran at a pace of approximately 4:42 per mile. Hedengren also finished second in the women's mile with a time of 4:24.33.

Junior Carter Cutting took home two championship titles for the Cougars. Not only did he finish first in the men's 1-mile with a time of 4:05.23, but he also ran the first leg in the distance medley.

The men's DMR team consisted of Cutting, Brayden Dahl, Brayden Packard and Tayvon Kitchen. They won the medley with a time of 9:35.98. The women's DMR team with Taylor Rohatinsky, Kali McEuen, Krystie Solomon and Jenna Hutchins finished with a time of 11:11.95.

Senior Riley Chamberlain won the women's 800 race with a time of 2:06:21. Two weeks prior, Chamberlain set the NCAA mile record with a time of 4:20.61.

Senior Creed Thompson finished first in the men's 3,000 with a time of 7:52.90. He ran at the approximate pace of 4:13 per mile. Kitchen finished right behind Thompson, a fraction of a second later, with a time of 7:52.91.

Paje Rasmussen, Marianne Barber, McEuen and Sami Oblad took first in the women's 4x400. They finished with a time of 3:31.40.

The Cougars' next meet will be on March 13-14 at the NCAA Indoor National Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
