BYU swim has solid debut at MPSF Open Water Championship over the weekend

Over the weekend in Long Beach, Calif., BYU swim and dive participated for the first time ever in the MPSF Open Water Championship, making its debut at Marine Stadium.

After solid performances from multiple Cougars on the team, the men's and the women's team each earned a respectable result overall as the men finished in fourth and the women finished in fifth.

Starting off on Saturday with the men's 5K race, Darwin Anderson, Tanner Nelson, Easton Mousser and Dane Weber represented the team, with Anderson leading the Cougars with a finish of 9th place overall at 1:02:15.80. Weber also had a very respectable race, finishing with a time of 1:04:51.39 and earning himself 16th place. Mousser and Nelson earned 20th and 30th overall in the race.

The women's 5k continued shortly after, and the Cougars had freshmen Melissa Turlea and Cher Patrick participating in the race. Patrick finished in 15th place with a time of 1:04:56.00, and Turlea followed her in 32nd with a time of 1:07:14.00.

Following the 5k events, the 2000 relay race commenced, with the men's team consisting of Anderson, Mousser, Weber, and Nelson yet again. After a close battle, the team finished in second place with a time of 24:35.03.

The women’s 2000 relay team finished in third, with a time of 26:13.16. Haylee Tiffany and Kara Martinson joined the relay team alongside Turlea and Patrick.

A score of 94 overall for the men earned them fourth place in the tournament, and the women earned fifth place with a score of 65.

The Cougars will travel to Las Vegas on Nov. 7 to take on UNLV for their next matchup.
