BYU swim and dive teams open the 2025 season with the Royal vs. Navy meet

Spirits were high as the BYU men's and women's swim and dive teams competed against each other in a 20-event meet.

Sixteen freshmen are starting on the team for this 2025-2026 season and they all had a chance to show off their skills.

The excitement to get into the groove of a fresh season was obvious. Swimmers and divers were showing a high amount of energy throughout their events, including the ROC belly-flop contest.

Coach Tamber McCallister said her teams have a lot of new swimmers.

"Club swimming is a very individualized sport, so we're trying to teach them how to be a good teammate at this meet," she said.

The groups were actually Royal vs. Navy, and while Navy was leading in swim during the majority of the meet, the score was tied at the last event. The mens' 400 free relay was the deciding factor, and it ended with the Navy team finishing with the win. The diving team ended with a Royal win, the eight athletes competing.

The team does not have another home meet until January, but the athletes and McCallister don't seem worried about the unusual schedule.

"I think without as much competition on the front end, that gives us a good face for training and then we'll be able to show some skills on the back end of the season when we have some home weeks here," she said.

BYU swim and dive will next compete on Oct. 3 against Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colorado.
