BYU men's volleyball suffers defeat in 5-set thriller against No. 18 Stanford

In a captivating five-set showdown, the BYU men’s volleyball team ultimately fell short against the No. 18 Stanford Cardinals (25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 25-22, and 10-15).

This tightly contested match was marked by fierce competition and shifting momentum.

Following the previous night's face-off at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, California, the Cougars once again struggled to overcome a resilient Stanford team. Despite their determined efforts, BYU struggled with consistency, enabling Stanford to seize key opportunities.

Throughout the match, the Cougars posted a total of 64 kills. Trent Moser led the charge with a match-high 22 kills and a .342 hitting percentage. Trevor Herget and AJ Cottle added to the effort with 13 and 10 kills, respectively.

Tyler Herget delivered a notable performance, posting a double-double with 50 assists and 11 digs, ensuring a dynamic offense across the court.

On the defensive side, Connor Oldani led the effort with 13 digs, while Moser contributed significantly with four blocks, including one solo block. Cottle also added a solo block to support the defense.

In the opening set, BYU initially maintained a slim lead. The set saw 12 ties and 2 lead changes, underscoring the evenly matched competition.

Stanford initially pushed ahead to a 14-10 lead, but a timely attack by Moser sparked BYU's four-point rally, leveling the score once more. The back-and-forth battle continued until Gavin Chambers clinched the set with a decisive attack for a 25-22 finish.

The second set began with Stanford establishing a quick 3-0 lead. Although Cottle faced early challenges with three attack errors, he found his rhythm with a crucial kill that helped BYU even the score at 4-4.

Stanford responded with strong blocking, establishing a five-point advantage they maintained until a BYU service error concluded the set.

In the third set, BYU took the early lead but struggled to sustain it as Stanford leveled the score at 19-19, eventually closing out the set with a 25-22 victory.

The fourth set saw BYU shifting the game, surging to a quick 4-0 lead highlighted by an ace from Tyler Herget, a kill from Oldani, and a block by Cottle.

Stanford couldn't match BYU's pace, leading to a 25-22 set win for the Cougars, with Trevor Herget particularly shinning in attacks.

In the final short set to 15, BYU initially carried momentum from the previous set, but Stanford swiftly regained control. The Cougars never managed to lead, and Stanford sealed the match with a 15-10 win.

Looking ahead, the Cougars aim to rebound in an upcoming two-game home series against Concordia University Irvine. These matches will take place Friday and Saturday at the Smith Fieldhouse, starting at 7 p.m. MDT.
