BYU men's volleyball dominates Jessup to remain undefeated in conference play

The No. 6 BYU men’s volleyball team traded the mountains in Utah for the California coast this weekend as it had two MPSF Conference matchups.

After a win against UC Merced on Friday night, the Cougars came back for a match against Jessup on Saturday night.

BYU dropped the opening set 25-23 but responded by winning the next three to secure the conference win against the Warriors 23-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-16.

Jessup came out strong early, taking advantage of momentum at home to claim the first set 25-23, putting pressure on BYU early in the game. The Cougars swiftly responded by dominating on the offensive side and building a comfortable lead. They won the second set quickly 25-16.

BYU carried their momentum into the next two sets, controlling on both the defensive and offensive side, and limiting Jessup’s attacks. Throughout the third set, the Cougars started off with a 5-1 run, but Jessup fought back and went on an 8-2 lead, bringing the score to 9-7. BYU battled back with each point, ultimately winning the set 25-20.

In the fourth set, neither team held more than a one-point lead. BYU ultimately closed the door with strong performances from various players. They pulled together points from players across the board, gaining them the third and final set lead 25-16.

Trent Moser led the team with 12 kills, Teilon-Jonathan Tufuga trailed behind with 11, and Connor Oldani racked up nine. Moser held a kill percentage of .632.

The Cougars had a total of nine blocks, with two solo blocks coming from Oldani and Gavin Chambers.

On the defensive side, both Tyler Herget and Jackson Fife achieved season highs with 10 digs each.

The weekend marked the opening of MPSF Conference play for the Cougars. They are currently 2-0 in MPSF play and 15-4 overall this season. The Cougars will take on No. 18 Stanford Friday and Saturday. Friday’s matchup is set to begin at 7 p.m. MDT in California.
