BYU men’s track team qualifies their DMR for the NCAA indoor national championship

This past weekend members of the BYU men’s track team traveled to Boulder, Colorado, to participate in the Colorado Last Chance Indoor Invitational.

For a chance to qualify for the NCAA Indoor National Championship in the Distance Medley Relay, Big 12 men’s track and field Co-Athlete of the week Tayvon Kitchen, All-American Jonah Heimuli, Jake Orr and the indoor mile school record holder Carter Cutting finished the race with a season’s best of 9:28.60.

The NCAA applies a conversion for time when certain races take place above "altitude." This is considered anything over 3,000 feet.

Where Boulder is approximately 5,400 feet, the time for the men’s DMR race after attitude conversion was 9:18.97.

This qualifying time currently puts the Cougars at the eighth fastest time qualified for the championship meet.

Other notable performances at the meet included Jonah Heimuli’s 400m personal best and first place finish. With a time of 46.81, he set the No. 8 all-time school record in the indoor 400m.

Freshman Jacob Robinson finished first in the 800m, running a personal best 1:51.64. Competing in the mile, Caleb Johnson finished in second place with a time of 4:10.53.

The Cougars are set to travel to the Big 12 Indoor Championship in Lubbock, Texas, which will take place Feb. 27.
