The BYU men's tennis team faced off outdoors for the first time in the 2026 season and suffered its third loss with 4-0 loss to Arizona.
BYU started the evening off with doubles where the Cougars struggled to find any rhythm against the Wildcats.
The Cougars' doubles partners included Adam Chodur and Otto Schreiner, Tygen Goldammer and TJ Wells, along with Hardy Owen and Caden Hasler.
Chodur and Schreiner struggled and lost 6-3 while Goldammer and Wells kept it slightly closer but lost 6-4 and gave the Wildcats their first overall point of the evening, 1-0.
“We were in those matches,” coach Zack Warren said. “We just got to be a little more disciplined through them.”
The same story could be told in singles with one bright spot coming from Chodur, who won his first set in singles, 7-6, in a back-and-forth battle and was up 4-3 in the second set before the match was unfinished due to Arizona taking the overall win 4-0.
Three Cougars lost in singles including: Schreiner, Hasler and Yubel Urbi in contests that were not close.
While BYU suffered a negative outing, Urbi returned back to the court, after suffering an injury in Boston.
“It was great to see Yubel out there looking healthy, and playing tennis again," Warren said. “It’s great to have him back.”
Wells and Goldammer were also down in their first sets but ultimately didn’t finish due to the match already being over.
“We were competitive [in] every line," Warren said. “It’s just about staying disappointed through the duration of the match. Hopefully we can make those adjustments on Saturday.”
Overall, while the Cougars' loss was lopsided, it reflects why BYU joined the Big 12 conference. It is one of the most competitive conferences in all of collegiate tennis, and the Cougars will learn from devastating losses like these and continue to gain experience as conference play continues into the future.
The Cougars will continue on into the weekend with another Big 12 matchup against Oklahoma State at home on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
