BYU men's swim and dive looks to start season strong at CMU Shootout

The BYU men's swim and dive team heads to Grand Junction, Colorado, Friday and Saturday to compete in the CMU Shootout.

The event is hosted by Colorado Mesa University and will feature teams from across the Mountain West, including Utah Tech, Utah, Western Colorado, Adams State and Colorado Mesa.

This is the first meet against other universities for the Cougars and the first since the Navy vs. Royal meet.

It also is one of the first meets under new head diving coach Tom Huynh, who came from Marshall University.

Huynh has had plenty of success in all aspects of diving. At Purdue University, he was a research fellow studying biomechanics for divers and was mentored by Olympic diving coach David Boudia. The meet will be a chance to showcase what the divers have been working on.

One swimmer to watch is Lucca Ferreira, who won the 125 butterfly, 25 freestyle and 75 freestyle for Team Royal in the Royal vs. Navy meet. Ferreira joined the team in 2026 from Belo Horizonte, Brazil and will be looking to leave his mark in Grand Junction this weekend.

Two of the divers to watch from the men’s team this weekend include Rock Sweet from Montgomery, Texas, who previously dove at the University of Kentucky and McKay Lund from Clovis, California, who previously dove at Buchanan High School. Sweet and Lund took second and third place at the Royal vs Navy meet in September.

The meet will be a great opportunity for the swimmers to gauge where they are at and what they need to improve on before heading to their next meet in Los Angeles, California at the UC Santa Barbara Invite.

The event can be streamed on CMU’s website (cmumavericks.com) starting at 4 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
