BYU men's soccer remains undefeated at regionals after overpowering Oregon State 2-1

OGDEN — BYU men’s soccer ended its undefeated regionals run with a final win against Oregon State 2-1 during Saturday's second game.

The first move in the game started by a BYU corner that was passed in to Ammon Oyler, whose header was saved by the goalie’s fingertips.

Closely after that, Oregon State had its first shot on goal that landed just under a foot above the top goal post.

Shots were exchanged back and forth for the first 15 minutes. BYU coach Brandon Giliam subsisted in new players to help switch things up.

Surprisingly, Friday night's hand ball from Montana was not the only hand ball seen at regionals.

Debate came over the crowd after what looked like another hand ball in the box that was not called.

Brayden Gonder was one of many BYU players who saw action at Saturday night's second game. After getting fouled on by an Oregon State player, Gonder was able to take a free shot outside the goal box. The ball curved right into Collin Jones, who headed the ball in, giving the Cougars the lead 1-0.

Following this, Oregon State had a free kick outside of BYU’s box which had the ball rolling in ball stop nets. Trading free kicks, a Beavers player received the first yellow card for a foul made on Colton Rouse. His free kick hit the wall of defense and went out of play.

BYU took its corner shot which nearly went in the goal by itself but was solidified by Dylan Rodriguez header in bringing the score to 2-0. The halftime whistle blew right after the celebrations ended.

The biggest setback of the match came for the Cougars after Kyle Walbruch assisted goal went through the hole in the soccer net, making the sideline referee believe it did not go in. After a few moments, the goal was taken back for what they considered to be offsides, another questionable call made by the referees and upset fans after watching the replay.

Oregon State got its first goal, but not before bloodshed. A corner pass in found its way to the middle of the goal box, where Oregon State’s shot connected with Rouse's face before the Beavers put it in the back of the net. Rouse was taken out by medical to help stop the nose bleed.

With the score being 2-1, Oregon State finally stopped its grid lock positioning and spread out its players more, which gave the Cougars an easier time heading to the goal box.

Gonder saw his last bit of action for the night after he was taken out in the penalty box by an Oregon State player, leaving him on the sidelines to be checked for injuries. No foul was called and no penalty was given to BYU for the injury in the box.

BYU finished the game strong, keeping its undefeated streak alive.

The semifinals and the finals will be held on Sunday in Ogden.

After requests were made by BYU to move the finals to a different day, the requests were denied. Due to the BYU policy that it does not participate in sporting events on Sundays, the team will forfeit upcoming games in the regional.

The Cougars will continue to their season on Friday in a different tournament.
