Amid an undefeated season, BYU men's soccer beat UVU 3-0 Saturday and was named Utah Division Champions on Senior night at South Field.
BYU came out strong in the first half, showing its skills by maintaining possession and multiple shots on goal. With more patience coming from the Cougars in the first ten minutes, the press on UVU didn’t stop.
The first goal came from senior Carter Olsen after a pass was made to him by Ammon Oyler into the box, giving Olsen the angel for a header that placed the ball in the back of the net.
With the energy building for the Cougars, there was more aggression from the Wolverines. With a few tussles between BYU senior Ryan Tetro and a UVU player's slide tackle was made to get the ball back by Tetro, which ended in a yellow card. He came back strong with a header save in the box, keeping the lead over the Wolverines.
The Cougars had some setbacks throughout the game with a controversial call made from the center referee after a penalty kick call was not made when one of the Cougars was tripped in the box.
UVU was able to keep BYU at bay with its goalie having close fingertip saves off of the top bar.
The second half proved to be BYU’s even stronger half with two more goals, solidifying its 3-0 win.
Tetro made his first goal of the season with a pass in to the right side of the box gave him just enough to send the ball into the corner of the box, rolling just past the toes of the goalie.
A Wolverine player was substituted back into the game with his eyes set on Tetro. Just minutes after his substitution, him and Tetro collided in the box and the yellow card came out for the UVU player.
The final goal was made by Max Magleby after he outran the defense and had the open goal, with the ball rolling in the bottom left corner, grazing the post.
With the team undefeated, BYU goes into the first regionals game on Friday at Weber State.
